Energy storage devices based on novel materials – anodes, cathodes and electrolytes. Next generation batteries such as lithium-air, magnesium-air and zinc-air batteries; Fuel cells with novel catalysts; Development of supercapacitors and hybrid capacitors. Fundamental studies involving interfaces – hydrophobic interactions useful in biological systems, corrosion, lubrication.

Major Professional Contributions:

Prof. Sampath’s work is in the area of interdisciplinary engineering comprising basic science and applications demonstrating prototypes of various energy storage systems such as super capacitors, fuel cells, batteries and sensors. He has been part of a team that has worked on the improvement of iron based electrodes for Ni-Fe batteries (Indian Patent Application no. 2177/CHE/2013). This is being taken up further for prototyping with the help of an industry. He has developed and patented metal-air batteries. He has also contributed significantly to the development of lubricant additives for oil industries (IOCL, India and GM, USA). He has also made important and significant contributions in the area of interfacial chemistry..
