Major Professional Contributions:

Dr. VN Sharda did pioneering work in the field of process based finite element modeling for simulating runoff and soil erosion from agricultural watersheds treated with soil and water conservation engineering measures. He also critically analyzed the hydrological implications of planting Eucalyptus globulus in natural grasslands of Nilgiri catchments, evolved the concept of Conservation Bench Terrace System and studied the hydrological behavior of mountainous and ravinous watersheds under different landuse and management practices in the semi-arid and sub-humid climates. Dr. Sharda was also instrumental in delineating the country into 17 Soil Conservation Regions on the basis of homogeneity in climatic, physiographic, soil and land use attributes. He developed a conceptual water balance model for simulating climatic water balance, rainfall excess and runoff in hilly streams, Soil Loss Tolerance Limit Maps for all the states and identified and prioritized soil erosion risk areas for conservation planning in the country. Recently, he estimated the production and monetary losses due to water erosion for major rainfed crops of the country and also revised the sediment budget of the country by accounting for sedimentation in major reservoirs and landuse protection measures.
