Major Professional Contributions:

Prof. Borkar has many major contributions to the broad areas of stochastic control and stochastic algorithms.
1. Adaptive control : Self-tuning control of Markov chains without the strong identifiability condition, extensions of Kumar-Becker-Lin and Milito-Cruz schemes to non-finite set-ups and a finite time performance bound.
2. Average cost and risk-sensitive control : Analysis of average cost control under very general conditions that covers in particular queuing networks and extensions to continuous time/space and infinite dimensional frameworks. Analogous theory for risk-sensitive control, a popular paradigm in OR and finance.
3. Stochastic approximation : Contributions to multiscale and asynchronous schemes, stability tests, and finite time as well as asymptotic analysis of conventional algorithms. Applications to reinforcement learning algorithms of Al and to network pricing and topology control in wireless networks.
4. Other theoretical contributions : The abstract (semigroup) dynamic programming principle and a convex programming paradigm for stochastic control, agreement in distributed estimation, control of nonlinear filters, stochastic games, hybrid control, random fields, etc.
